Among the earliest acquired pieces was The Vision of St. Anthony of Padua by Francisco Zurbarán, the most significant Old Master painting in the collection. Other noteworthy works include paintings by Henry Siddens Mowbry, Thomas Couture, and post-Impressionist Henri Martin as well as 17th century Dutch examples of still lifes, portraits, and religious subjects. Sculpture by August Rodin and a bust of Sappho by Erastus Dow Palmer round out the collection.
