Creative Kids is an ongoing series of art-making programs for children of various ages accompanied by an adult. The series provides interactive experiences with visual arts and other modes of communication and is taught by an art historian or art educator. Following a guided tour in the museum, kids respond to their viewing experience with a hands-on art-making activity. All materials for the activities are provided. Creative Kids is funded by the DART Foundation.

Faces in the Museum, ages 6-11
Focus: The exhibition: Class Pictures: Photographs by Dawoud Bey Hands-on: Pencil sketching in the museum; portrait painting in room 204.

FEE: $3.00 Museum Member; $4.00 General Public

Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, 1-3 pm
Printmaking, ages 8-13
Focus: Prints in the museum’s collection. Hands-on: Learn how to make cool and colorful prints with styro-foam plates.

Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, 1-3 pm
You Gotta Have HeART!
We provide all the materials to make one-of-a kind Valentine cards.

All ages are welcome to this FREE event! No registration required.

Saturday, March 20, 2010, 1-3 pm
Africa is not a Country, ages 6-13
Focus: Learn about the diverse cultures of the continent of Africa. Hands-on: Make large Afriican masks using raffia, shells and cardboard.

FEE: $3.00 Museum Member; $4.00 General Public

Saturday, April 17, 2010, 1-3 pm
Artists as Storytellers, ages 8-11
Focus: Objects in the collection that tell a story or a represent a myth. Hands-on: Write a short story and draw a scene from it using markers, colored pencils or paints.

FEE: $3.00 Museum Member; $4.00 General Public

Saturday, May 15, 2010, 10-5 pm
East Lansing Art Festival~
Look for our booth to make masks and crowns.

All ages are welcome to this FREE event! No registration required.

Reservations are required for Creative Kids events unless otherwise noted. To reserve a spot, call (517)353-9834 or email Cari Wolfe. Class size is limited, must pre-register and pre-pay. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a parent.
