Lecture: Tours of Heaven and Hell in Early Christianity
Presenter: Chris Frilingos, Associate Professor, Religious Studies
Thursday, January 27, 2011, 6:30 pm
Kresge Art Museum
Paradise Lost by John Martin (British, 1789-1854), a series of 24 mezzotints included in the exhibition, provides the lecture foundation. Long before Milton and Dante, early Christian authors wrote about the landscapes and inhabitants of heaven and hell. Apocalypses (from the Greek term for "revelation") of the first and second centuries of the Common Era, relate the details of otherworldly journeys. Professor Frilingos will discuss canonical and extracanonical examples, including the Book of Revelation and the Apocalypse of Peter. For early Christians, these sources exposed the ties that bind this world and the next.
