Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch, 1898-1972)
Balcony, 1945, Lithograph
It looks as though Escher has inflated this
image like a balloon, an effect created by enlarging the
center four more times than the edges. An otherwise minute
and incidental balcony thus becomes the center of the work.
Though Escher did not produce many prints using this technique,
it is evidence of his keen desire to experiment with
a number of different spatial experiences.
