This classic 1936 film stars Charles Laughton and Gertrude Lawrence. Considered director Alexander Korda’s best film and a high point in early British cinema, this biographical portrait of Rembrandt captures his indomitable spirit. 90 minutes, black and white.

Vatel

Starring Gerard Depardieu and Uma Thurman, this sumptuous film is based on the true story of the chef Vatel and the spectacle of food, entertainment and intrigue, in preparation for Louis XIV’s visit to the Prince de Conde, shot at the 17th century chateau, Vaux le Vicomte.
Discussion to follow by Frank Rutledge, Professor and Chair, MSU Theater Department.
